LISTENING TO TALK SHOW; HOW TO IMPROVE LISTENING COMPREHENSION

A.     INTRODUCTION
There are many experts’ opinion and many ways to improve the comprehension of listeners. I think listeners can improve their comprehension if they do some exercise in many times and ways, and use some strategies in listening. There are several ways by Miki Garcia (1993) such as; listen daily, watch English films, and speak daily.
Listen daily. There are countless ways to listen to English online, such as CNN, BBC World, radio stations, and so on. Try to listen attentively, take a note, and summarize what has been reported. If you didn't understand it, repeat it again. If you find real life English a little difficult, find something easier.
            Watch English films. If you are a beginner, watch it with English subtitles. If you are learning American English, then stick with American films. Do not translate into your native language. Try to think in English while watching by using an English dictionary. If you are into sports, watch sports in English through satellite or cable TV.
            Speak English daily. Speaking, listening, writing and reading abilities go hand in hand. Increase vocabulary everyday. Set time for studying English every day, for example 30 minutes before going to work. Try to have a conversation with English speaking people as often as possible. If you don't live in an English speaking country, make an effort and be proactive. Enroll in English classes, attend English forums, join English-speaking expat groups, and volunteer to speak with English-speaking tourists, and so on. Learn about your country's culture and history, so that you can explain them to foreign tourists.
            This project is about my experience in listening to the talk show. It will present the content of the text and discuss how I improve my comprehension to the talk show.
B.     DESCRIPTION
Talk show is a television program or radio program where one person (or group of people) discusses various topics put forth by a talk show host. Sometimes, talk shows feature a panel of guests, usually consisting of a group of people who are learned or who have great experience in relation to whatever issue is being discussed on the show for that episode.
Other times, a single guest discusses their work or area of expertise with a host or co-hosts. A call-in show takes live phone calls from callers listening at home, in their cars, etc. Sometimes, guests are already seated but are often introduced and enter from backstage.
This text may contain some information/topic with the guest stars. Here are some samples of the talk show I have summarized;
Ø  This text told about moderator and teacher in the classroom
After presenter introducing the guest she asks what makes moderators different from teachers in a classroom? Mark McRae, is a lecturer at Manchester University answer that’s online or not, there obviously are differences between them, that’s trying to be funny. In computer conferencing is a dangerous business and often not very successful. Why? When you’re just reading text, it’s much easier to misunderstand. That’s not impossible, it’s just different. Online communication can either be synchronous, like teachers, moderators will praise people or point out to people where they may be going wrong. It’s very difficult to do that online. That’s much easier to have misunderstandings when communication is all text occasionally, flame each other. Flaming is what happens when one person ‘attacks’ another person online. It doesn’t happen very often and, it’s up to the moderator to set the rules for how people interact, and if someone breaks those rules the moderator will talk to him or her privately and remind them of how we should deal with each other. In fact, the aim of moderators is to make the technology transparent, so people don’t notice it’s there. It’s very different from the traditional classroom but there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be just as effective, even more so for some people.
Ø  This text told about hybrid car
In this recording the presenter was talking with Linda who has been test-driving a hybrid car. Linda spent three days last week trying it out. And presenter asks to Linda why that is? Linda answered she had been thinking of buying one for some time now.  Why hybrid cars are produce fewer emissions than conventional cars? Linda said she used to drive a conventional Honda Civic, so I was interested in seeing if the hybrid car is similar. From the outside it looks almost the same. And inside it’s very similar, until you look at the instrument panel. The main difference was that it’s quieter, and when you stop at traffic lights the petrol engine shuts down, so it’s completely silent. not at all that cause a problem when start moving again, As soon as start putting it into gear the engine instantly starts up again. She will certainly consider buying one. The boot is smaller than a conventional Civic, and it is more expensive. Based on her experience, for someone like her it’s ideal.
Ø  This text told about financial management course
In this recording, the presenter talking with Richard Manors, Chief financial officer of North London Concrete and she ask Ricard what effect on your approach to management of the company? And Richard said that It changed to different way of he looking at measuring business performance. And how does that work in practice? Richard said you have to look at how the company’s cash is deployed. And you need to know what’s happening to cash flow in the company. When you’ve analyzed all this you can take action to improve performance. At North London Concrete they launched a whole new integrated management system aimed at improving cash flow. They tie the company’s bonus system, they discovered that a lot of their cash was tied up in outstanding receivables; the first target I set was to reduce receivables collection. They decided to set a goal of reducing it to 35 days. To achieve this finance working on collections and the sales department targeting customers who paid on time. Now they have company’s cash flow situation is much healthier. Richard feels that he’s really in the driver’s seat now. He knows how the company is doing and can see how to improve performance.
In this semester I got a strategy in listening, so I decided to apply that strategy for finish this project, exactly to complete my summary. Before listening to the audio I want to know the content beforehand, then predict the content of the audio. While listening to the talk show I select what is important or useful things, then develop my own note-taking style, for sooner comprehension I focusing myself on the audio, the last while listening I don’t remember for some word that I lose. Finally, after listening to the talk show the average of the three audio eight times I know the talk show was talking about.
C.     CONCLUSION
In conclusion, there are many ways to improve listening comprehension. one of them is do more exercises in daily, search for new materials and apply some strategies that can help. This is the example;
Ø  Figure out the purpose for listening. Activate background knowledge of the topic in order to predict or anticipate content and identify appropriate listening strategies.
Ø  Attend to the parts of the listening input that are relevant to the identified purpose and ignore the rest. This selectivity enables students to focus on specific items in the input and reduces the amount of information they have to hold in short-term memory in order to recognize it.
Ø  Select top-down and bottom-up strategies that are appropriate to the listening task and use them flexibly and interactively. Students' comprehension improves and their confidence increases when they use top-down and bottom-up strategies simultaneously to construct meaning.
Ø   Check comprehension while listening and when the listening task is over. Monitoring comprehension helps students detect inconsistencies and comprehension failures, directing them to use alternate strategies.
Based on the explanation above, I think if we do that all well, occasionally, our listening comprehension will be improved.
